SAMA and Northeast Utilities Foundation hold Graduation Ceremony
Joined by Congressman John Larson and Northeast Utilities Foundation, President and Executive Director Patricia McCullough, SAMA held the second graduation ceremony of 2008 for the SAMA and North Utilities Foundation Energy and Computer Technology Training Program on December 18, 2008. This graduation class had a total of 13 graduates who attended the ten week course at the SAMA offices at 95 Park Street. While SAMA has had a total 16 graduating classes with 237 graduates in the Hartford office, this particular class was different in that they also received training in energy conservation methods as well as instructions on how to obtain financing for the purchase of energy efficient equipment for their businesses.

The graduates were applauded for their success in completing the program by several guest speakers and presenters that included Johnny R. Baez a student graduate who represented his fellow graduates and offered a special thank you to the class instructors Ana Sanchez –Adorno and Thomas Martinez. Others speakers included SAMA Board of Directors President, Angel Sierra, SAMA Executive Director Julio Mendoza, State Representative Minnie Gonzalez and Small Business Administration Hartford Office Deputy Director Greta Johanson.

Finally as is becoming the norm at SAMA graduation events the big surprise of the morning was the presentation by Congressman Larson and SBA Deputy Director Johanson of a check to SAMA in the amount of $282,000.00 which represent a three year grant from the SBA for SAMA to continue and expand the Computer Training Program into other cities in the Greater Hartford area, Waterbury and Danbury. SAMA Executive Director Julio Mendoza thanked Congressman Larson the SBA for their continued support of SAMA and Mr. Mendoza also thanked Raquel Kennedy a SAMA consultant for her help in securing this grant.

Brief History: Since 2000, approximately 237 Greater Hartford business owners have completed the training. SAMA has developed and implemented a computer training program specifically geared to Hispanics and minority-owned businesses located in the Greater Hartford and New Haven areas. The computer training program teaches fundamental organization for a business such as financial management, insurance, tax preparation, and record keeping, and merchants also learn how to engage in commerce on the Internet. While taking part in the computer training, merchants gained knowledge about energy conservation and methods for obtaining financing for energy efficient equipment for their businesses. |
